Piercing jewellery at El-Mundo Tattoo and Piercing Studio in Bern

Piercing jewelry is available in different shapes, colours and materials. Only material whose nickel content is less than 0.05% may be used as the first decoration, otherwise allergic reactions may occur (first jewellery: Bioplast or titanium).

After successful healing, other materials such as surgical steel SS 316L can be used without any problems. We have a wide selection of materials in the store and we are happy if you want to have a look at this!

UV piercing jewelry is very light and comfortable to wear. It is a plastic in which fluorescence pigments are incorporated. This matter begins to glow in the UVlight and very bright and pure colors are perceived.

Plastics are generally not suitable for first use and in sore piercing channels, as they have very small pores in which bodily fluids and skin secretions can accumulate.

Titan

Titanium is a lightweight, metallic-glossy material. It is absolutely nickel-free and is therefore suitable as a first decoration. When purchasing this jewelry, it is important to pay attention to an exact specification of the material. The most common and safest material is Titanium Grade 23.

Silver

Silver is a shiny white matter that discolors and therefore has to be cleaned from time to time with a silver cleaning agent. It has a higher nickel content and leads to allergic reactions and skin irritation in certain individuals. Silver should not be inserted directly into the stitch channel and must under no circumstances be used as the first decoration. It is best to wear it only on the surface together with a rod made of titanium or surgical steel (e.g. abdominal piercing, Nippelshild).

People who suffer from a nickel allergy should completely refrain from silver jewellery.

Bioplast and Teflon

Bioplast (PMFK) and Teflon (PTFE) are lightweight and smooth plastics that are ideally suited for the first and continuous use of piercing jewelry. They are biologically very well tolerated and do not cause allergies.

Since the surfaces of these substances are very smooth, foreign substances (e.g. secretion) very badly adheres to it. Therefore, using these materials, there are fewer to no complications during healing. It has a high degree of flexibility and can be tailored to the required length. In addition, it can be sterilized without restrictions, is not magnetic and does not need to be removed during X-rays.

Wood, horn and bone

Wood

Wood is very comfortable to wear as it is light and stays warm even at lower temperatures. It allows the skin to breathe, which means that there is hardly any talgab bearing or odour formation. A hardwood with a smooth ground surface is best.

Wood can cause allergic reactions in some people. It is possible that wood loses its shine over time. However, this can be prevented by the use of a vegetable oil. Wood should not be sterilized with vapour pressure, as it makes the matter brittle and cracked.

Horn & Bone

Animal matter liens such as horn and bones are easy to shape and can be sanded very smoothly. They also let the skin breathe and retain their warmth even at cold temperatures.

Animal materiel should not be steam sterilized, as it may dry out and cause cracks. These materials tend to form bacteria when cleaned poorly. The surface should be smooth and well finished, with no scratches or other bumps.

Surgical steel

Surgical steel (316L) consists of an iron alloy which contains small amounts of nickel and therefore should not be used as an initial piercing, as allergic reactions may occur. Once the stitch channel has healed, this material can be easily used as a piercing jewelry. In medicine, surgical steel (316L) is used for bone fixing screws, bone plates, wires, clamps or for pacemaker electrodes.

Acrylic and Plexiglas

Acrylic or plexiglass are transparent plastics. Due to their very smooth surface, they are often used for plugs or expansion rods. In most cases, the materials are accepted by the body without any problems, have a high tolerance and can be processed in such a way that they glow under UV light.

Piercing jewelry made of acrylic or plexiglass has tiny pores in which body fluids and skin secretions can accumulate. Therefore, it is extremely important to clean the jewelry regularly and thoroughly to prevent smell and especially irritation of the skin. Sterilization with vapour pressure should be handled, as the color can change.
